Demolition of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium put on hold until March 8

Major demolition work at Sydney's Allianz Stadium has been put on hold after a judge issued a temporary injunction delaying the project until next month.

Justice Nicola Pain on Tuesday granted a temporary injunction in the Land and Environment Court, restricting hard demolition work on the stadium until March 8 while she considers a challenge to stop the stadium being levelled.

Local Democracy Matters launched the court action in a bid to stop the NSW government knocking down the stadium before the March 23 election.

It argues the government didn't exhibit the demolition proposal for the required period of time and failed to consider design excellence.

The community group's treasurer, Chris Maltby, understands the injunction will stop the stadium roof and other fixed structures being removed until the judge delivers her decision.

"If (the state government) comes up with rules that they expect the rest of us to follow then really they ought to follow them themselves," he told reporters outside court.

He believes the decision to redevelop the stadium seems to have been made in "a great deal of haste" and was a "terrible waste of public money".

The state government plans to demolish and rebuild Allianz Stadium in Moore Park at a cost of $730 million, in addition to the refurbishment of Olympic Park's ANZ Stadium.

Both NSW Labor and the Greens oppose the plans.

The community group's legal bid is being heard concurrently with an action brought by Waverley Council, which is also challenging the knockdown.

Despite the injunction stopping large-scale levelling, non-structural demolition of bathrooms and other facilities may continue.

Justice Pain said she expected to hand down her decision by March 8.
