One Holden Commodore owner has gone to great lengths to make over their car into a permanently top-down convertible - but police were not impressed.

The red vehicle was spotted in Perth, sporting some modifications WA Police Traffic said made it "unroadworthy".

Not only had the roof been taken off, but somebody had spray-painted "RED ROCKET" on the side of the car.

"It may seem a little 'roofless' but it isn't always cool to go topless at the beach," police said in a post on the WA Police Traffic Twitter profile.

A police spokesperson told nine.com.au the vehicle was issued with a defect notice for "vehicle structure illegally modified”.

The owner of the vehicle was not charged with any offence.

The car was deemed unroadworthy and towed from the location.
