Werribee: Parents 'sickened' after boys escape Melbourne childcare

Parents in Melbourne's west are reeling after disturbing dash-cam footage showed two young boys running from their day-care onto a busy road.

The vision obtained by The Age showed the children walking across lanes of traffic on Ballan Road in Werribee at about 10am yesterday.

Motorists came to a complete stop on the 70km/hr road, with one driver leaving his vehicle to lead the boys — both understood to be two-and-a-half years old — to the safety of the side of the road.

Moments later staff from Werribee West Family Centre, where the boys fled, collected the pair and returned them to the centre.

Both boys were uninjured.

Today parents and community members told 9News they are concerned to leave their children at the centre.

“I’m absolutely mortified… the roads out here are completely unforgiving, it gets me upset, because you imagine your own children,” one parent said.

Another added, “I was shocked to tell you the truth, it made me feel sick.”

The CEO of the childcare service, Kim Bertino, has released a statement, describing the incident as "unfortunate and unacceptable".

In an email sent out to families last night, management confirmed the Ballan Road site is safe and secure again.

Today they were also on hand today to brief parents on the situation.

“We've been overwhelmed by parents wanting to contact us and to have the conversations and to have some clarity about how this situation occurred and most importantly that this situation doesn't happen again,” Ms Bertino said.

A number of investigations are now looking into how this incident was able happen. Along with a Department of Education and Training probe, the centre is carrying out its own review led by an independent assessor.
