Melbourne school evacuated during police 'safety check'

Students and staff at a Melbourne high school were forced to evacuate as police conducted a safety check this afternoon.

Officers were called to Mount Waverley Secondary College on Lechte Road about 12.15pm.

Students told 9News they were told to sit on the school’s oval for more than an hour and were not given any further information.

Police confirmed they were conducting a safety check.

It’s understood staff and students have been allowed to return to the campus.

An investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
