Building fire in heart of Melbourne's CBD

A fire that sent thick plumes of grey smoke rising from Melbourne’s CBD this morning has now been brought under control.

The MFB were called to the Crazy Wing restaurant near the corner of Bourke Street and Russell Street at about 11.15 am.

A crew of more than 50 firefighters were dispatched to fight the blaze in the two story building which quickly spread to the roof.

An MFB spokesperson declared the fire “under control at 11:52am”.

People from surrounding buildings were evacuated and authorities have asked the public to avoid the area pointing to risks presenting from the smoke.

At this stage the cause of the blaze is unknown.
