Residents evacuated as fire breaks out in Melbourne nursing home

A nursing home in Melbourne has been evacuated after an early morning fire forced the facility’s residents onto the street.

Firefighters raced to the Aveo Freedom home on Bluff Road in Hampton East, following reports a fire had broken out on the first floor of the premises shortly before 6am.

Approximately 40 residents of the home were evacuated, while dozens of firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

The fire was brought under control in little over half an hour.

Emergency services remain on the scene, treating some residents who had to be evacuated.
