A man has undergone surgery after being stabbed and beaten with a wrench during a terrifying ambush outside his home north of Adelaide.

Sonya Scott says her partner, Gavin Haines, had just arrived home from work when the attack happened.

She said four men pulled up in a car in front of their Montague Road home at Pooraka around 12:30 this morning.

It was then three people got out of the vehicle and confronted him.

"(We) Heard the guys say Gavin - is that you Gavin? So he walked towards the front and they jumped him. Took his phone, took his keys to the house and stabbed him in the back and the shoulder," Ms Scott told 9News.

But the violent attack didn't stop there, with the men giving chase as Mr Haines tried to flee.

"He didn't want to come in the house straight away because he didn't want them following him in so he walked down the road a bit and then they followed him and then bashed him with the wrench," Ms Scott said.

The gang drove off following the attack.

Police believe the attack wasn't a random incident, but Ms Scott said her partner didn't recognise his attackers.
