Queensland's acting premier Campbell Newman has been asked to consider standing for pre-selection in the federal seat of Indi in Victoria.

Former secretary of the Wodonga Liberal Party branch Lloyd Deane has reportedly written to Mr Newman who lost his seat of Ashgrove in last Saturday's Queensland election.

"I am writing to ask if you would be interested in talking to the Wodonga branch of the Liberal Party regarding standing for pre-selection for the Federal seat of Indi," Mr Deane said in an edited version of the letter published by Fairfax.

He went on to say that the idea of asking Mr Newman if he would be interested in talking to the local branch was "received favourably" at a meeting this week.

"Of course it is a big decision for you and your wife to make," the letter said.

"We ask you to consider the matter and to check out the electorate and all relevant matters."

The letter has not been endorsed by the local branch.

Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella lost the seat of Indi to Independent Cathy McGowan in the last federal election.
