Newlywed migrant couple killed in crash

A newlywed migrant couple trying to build a life in Australia has been killed while waiting at traffic lights in southeast Queensland.

Grace Cai, 27, and Calvin Zhou, 26, died when a car smashed into their hatchback, pushing them into a jacaranda tree, at an intersection in Toowoomba about 4.45am yesterday.

The young couple had met and fell in love in Australia after moving here from China about five years ago to study commerce, the Courier-Mail reports.

They returned to China last year to get married before buying a franchise of Sunshine Kebabs in Toowoomba.

The couple was also planning on buying a house and having children after settling into the small community, kebab co-worker Sukhdeep Kaur Sony told the newspaper.

"She showed me her wedding photos," Ms Sony said. "They were really happy together."

Ms Sony said the couple normally swapped shifts, with one opening the store in the morning and the other working nights.

She was not sure why they were both in their car yesterday morning.

The car that collided into the couple's hatchback overturned in yesterday's crash, trapping the 29-year-old East Toowoomba driver.

He was taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital with non-life threatening injuries where police interviewed him.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators have examined the crash site and continue their inquiries.
