Man seriously burned after explosion in Newcastle unit

A man has suffered serious burns after an explosion inside a Newcastle unit.

Four paramedic crews and a specialist medical team rushed to the apartment in Darby Street, Cooks Hill, after reports of an explosion just after 6.45am today.

A man aged in his 40s suffered significant burns which may have compromised his airways.

He has been airlifted to the Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.

Inspector Joel De Suna from NSW Ambulance said critical care teams acted swiftly.

"These types of incidents are frightening, they can happen so quickly and the injuries can be catastrophic," Mr De Suna said.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the Cooks Hill unit after the fire broke out. 9News

"Severe burns and smoke related injuries can often be life threatening, it's vital that we start treating any type of burn immediately."
