Streaming between the sheets: New survey reveals Aussie couples’ viewing habits

Australians are shutting out time with their partners in favour of streaming on their mobile devices and tablets in the bedroom, a new Telstra survey has revealed.

Almost one third of those surveyed, 32 percent said they regularly stream while in bed, with 20 percent of respondents confessing to ignoring their partners in favour of screen time.

“People used to talk about ‘don’t have a television in your bedroom’, like that was considered to be the death knell of a relationship, but now it’s portable devices,” psychologist Melanie Schilling told 9NEWS.

However, despite the increased use of portable devices, Telstra’s Michele Garra said people are still choosing to stream together.

“As much as your mobile phone lets you now do it when you are on your own, in general people actually prefer to do those things as a family or with a partner,” Ms Garra said. 

While the bedroom is increasingly becoming the place for screen time, one in five chooses to watch their favourite shows while in the kitchen and 12 percent admitted to streaming in the bathroom.
