New study reveals just how much school holidays impact parents’ budget

The cost of keeping the kids entertained over the school holidays is eating into the budgets of parents and carers, according to a new Australian study which has revealed 40 percent of parents feel “burdened” by holiday costs. 

A survey by finder.com.au has revealed that on average, parents are spending $592 on school holiday activities, with some forking out even more.

Parents in the Australian Capital Territory rounded out the list with an average spend of $831, followed by NSW with $672, and Victoria with $655.

The additional holiday expenses come on top of the national Christmas spend of $8.9 billion. 

The survey found the top expense was from dining out, which counted for 39 percent of the cost, followed by going to the movies, road trips and theme park and zoo visits.

Bessie Hassan from finder.com.au says there are ways parents can significantly reduce the school holiday budget and save money. 

Ms Hassan recommends writing a list to eliminate any impulse buys, taking advantage of free events in the local area and managing your children’s expectations.

“When the kids are talking about expensive trips, remind them that it’s also about spending time with family and friends, playing a game of backyard cricket and baking cookies,” Ms Hassan told Weekend TODAY this morning.
