Over 150 new school zone speed limits roll out in Australian state from today

Drivers in South Australia will have to take their foot off the accelerator from today as the first of more than 150 40km/hr limits are rolled out in school zones around the state.

As previously announced by Premier Peter Malinauskas, the first of the new zones will be enforced from today outside Marryatville High School in Adelaide.

This will be followed by Goodwood Primary and St Thomas School tomorrow.

A crash on Kensington Road near Marryatville High School in 2023 left two students seriously injured, and prompted the inquiry that has led to the new rollout.

Drivers will be alerted by signage to the new speed limits, which are in force between 8am-9.30am and 2pm-4pm Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays and school holidays.

There will be 150 such zones around the state by the end of 2026, the government has claimed.

The move brings South Australia into line with other states and territories around the country.

However, the government has confirmed that pre-existing 25km/hr zones that exist outside some schools will hew to their current speed limit.

"The safety of our students is our top priority," Education Minister Blair Boyer said.

"By reducing vehicle speeds during peak school-drop and pick-up times, we are giving drivers more time to react and reducing the risk of serious injuries or fatalities."
