The school zones in NSW where fines doubled last year

School zones are back in force across New South Wales today, sparking a warning from the NRMA about speeding.

Speeding fines in February last year almost doubled on the year before with the NRMA finding there was a 95 per cent increase.

There were 17,494 speeding fines in school zones issued in February 2021 compared to 8947 in February 2020.

With school zones applying from today and most students returning to class next week, the NRMA is calling on drivers to "adjust their behaviour".

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury asked drivers to "do the right thing" around schools.

"An almost doubling of fines last year in school zones during the back-to-school month on the year before is a terrible statistic and with school zones beginning today across NSW, we don't want to see the alarming figures of last year repeated," he said.

He also flagged with the resurgence of COVID-19, more parents would be choosing to drop their kids at school instead of using public transport.

There were a number of school zones in NSW that saw an alarming jump in fines year-on-year.

Offences on Victoria Road in Ryde doubled from 532 in 2020 to 1131 in 2021.

They also jumped on Bunnerong Road in Eastgardens from 525 in 2020 to 1057 in 2021.

In Strathfield, two spots on The Boulevard saw fines jump from 240 in 2020 to 492 in 2021.

Fines on Avoca Street in Randwick increased from 170 in 2020 to 397 in 2021.

Meanwhile, Edgar Street in Condell Park saw a large jump in fines from 83 in 2020 to 228 in 2021.

The fines were issued by fixed and red-light speed cameras and 85 per cent of fines issued were for drivers caught speeding by 10km/h or less.

Mr Khoury urged parents to teach children safe behaviours when heading to school.

"If you're walking younger children to school, it is a fantastic opportunity to practice safe behaviours together. Hold their hand the whole way; point out and explain any dangers on the way such as cars reversing out of driveways and safely crossing roads," he said.

"For older children walking to school alone for the first time, we recommend mapping out a route together with safe crossings and practising the route with parents or older siblings before school returns."
