An L-plater, who allegedly reversed into two police officers and later choked one of them, has made an extraordinary claim in a Sydney court.

Sean Matthews, 33, was allegedly travelling in an Audi at "excessive speed" when he failed to stop for police in Gladesville about 8.30pm last night.

He then allegedly backed into police, dragging an officer several metres before crashing into a Toyota Kluger with a mother and child inside.

Police allege that during his arrest, he violently struggled and choked one of the officers.

Matthews has been charged with intentionally choke person with recklessness, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, hinder or resist police, police pursuit and other traffic offences.

Representing himself in Parramatta Court today, Matthews claimed police had made the whole thing up.

He told the magistrate police contrived the story, because they wanted him "to go to jail" and that he ended up on the wrong side of the road by accident.

At a press conference this morning, acting Superintendent Traci Watt told media that police approached the Audi in Hunters Hill after having tried to pull over the driver on Ryde Road in Gladesville.

"As police approached, the driver has reversed that vehicle into police and collided with a Toyota Kluger and a concrete pillar," she told reporters.

Watt said one of the officers was allegedly dragged for two to three metres.

"During the arrest of this male, he has choked one of the officers and with the assistance of an off-duty police officer and a member of the public, a 33-year-old Eastwood man was arrested," she said.

A 33-year-old male constable remains in hospital where he is being assessed for abrasions and neck injuries, she said.

"It's always concerning. We as police officers are aware of the inherent risk involved," Watt said.

"We would like to point out that we are very grateful to the member of the public who offered assistance."
