Rural and remote communities will benefit from a federal government program aimed at getting more nurses working in frontline health services.

The three-year program aims to recruit more nurses to work in general practice and primary health care, particularly in regional areas.

Health Minister Sussan Ley says the $6.4 million scheme will focus on chronic disease management and care of the elderly.
