More bad news for Abbott in latest poll

After admitting to a "ragged" week for his government, Tony Abbott won't be happy with a new poll, which puts the coalition further behind Labor than when it lost the Victorian state election.

News Corp Australia reports the Galaxy poll is all bad news for the prime minister, with primary support for the government plunging to 38 percent, while support for Labor has risen to 41 percent.

On a two-party preferred basis, the government is running 10 points behind Labor, 55 to 45 percent.

"Given that the coalition lost government in Victoria after just one term in office, this suggests that a similar fate could await the Abbott government unless voters see a notable improvement in their performance," Galaxy pollster David Briggs said.

Mr Abbott will be hoping an overhaul of his paid parental leave scheme, which cuts out the most wealthy mothers and expands childcare options, will help his numbers in the weeks ahead.
