New move on firearms trafficking

The federal government is again trying to impose a mandatory minimum jail sentences for firearm trafficking.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan on Wednesday reintroduced a bill which he said would send the strongest possible message to organised crime.

The measure imposes a mandatory five-year minimum jail term for trafficking - the issue that proved the stumbling block in the Senate.

It also increases the maximum term from 10 years to 20.
