New CCTV cameras to be installed across Melbourne's inner suburbs

More than $250,000 worth of security cameras will be installed across Melbourne's inner suburbs.

The City of Melbourne is investing in seven new cameras along Lygon Street, which has seen a surge in crime in recent years.

Business traders have welcomed the move, which is hoped to stamp out anti-social behaviour.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp confirmed today there would be cash allocated for the new CCTV cameras along the stretch of Lygon Street between Elgin and Victoria streets.

It will be made official tomorrow when council's new draft budget is released to the public for consultation.

"We've allowed half a million dollars, just over, to be able to purchase and install more cameras in this area," Capp said.

Stuzzichino Cafe's Angelo Gibaldi said there has been "great concern" about crime in the area over the past couple of years.

Gibaldi said he hoped the cameras would deter anti-social behaviour.

"I'm not sure if they're gonna work. Cameras are cameras and people know they can still get away with it, cover themselves up and do whatever they've gotta do - but it's a good start," he said.

Joanne Traversa from Digby's Boutiques said theft had been particularly bad.

"My sister up the road has been attacked," she said,

"A few of the other girls in the shops, again, all been attacked. It's scary."

The proposed budget will be made public in full from tomorrow, with community consultation on the figures open until June 8.
