New bionic ears for NSW adult patients

NSW adults with severe hearing loss will trade in their "bionic ears" for new ones as part of a state government funding boost.

Up to 370 outdated cochlear implants worn by adult public patients will be replaced before the end of 2019 thanks to $2.83 million in government funding.

"For many, the upgrading will mean a huge improvement in everyday pleasures that most people take for granted, like making a phone call or listening to music," Health minister Brad Hazzard said on Sunday.

Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants replace the function of the damaged inner ear and provide sound signals to the brain.

Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children chief executive Chris Rehn said the upgrades will be "life changing" for recipients.
