New art gallery exhibition reimagines old memories

A new exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia is showcasing the subversive, little-known art of hand-coloured photography.
The practice takes black and white photographs, many decades old, and reimagines them by adding paint, water colour and even media.
As well as reinventing historical works of art, the process is also about challenging the conventional black-and-white photographs of an earlier time.
‘Coloured My World’, an exhibition running until August 30 at the gallery in Sydney, includes feature snaps from the 1970s and 1980s showing family life in Australia and the fashion world, recreated with colour by artists.
The exhibition organisers said social media had sparked a renewed interest in photography.
“The photographs seek to create a direct connection between the experiences of the photographer and the viewer,” a statement on the gallery website reads.
“They personalise the photographic print and imbuing (sic) it with individuality, intimacy and warmth”.
