Nearly 2000 Volkswagens recalled over airbag defect

Nearly 2000 Volkswagen cars have been recalled due to an airbag defect.

Approximately 1870 Volkswagen Caddies made between 2021 and 2023 were issued a recall notice by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, and Regional Development on Friday.

The car's airbag system may be defective, the department said.

"An airbag deactivation switch may have been incorrectly fitted instead of a blanking plug," it said in the recall notice.

"This could cause the driver to assume that the front passenger airbag has been deactivated when it is always operational."

The defect is dangerous as a passenger may seat a child in the front seat if they think the airbag has been deactivated when it is actually operational, the department said.

Caddy owners can contact their nearest Volkswagen dealership to schedule an inspection of the vehicle.

If it is found to be defective, it will be corrected for free.
