The navy has blown up a pair of old sea mines likely left over from World War II.

One was found by divers at sea off Cooktown and the other on the beach at Newcastle Bay, Cape York, both in northern Queensland.

The disposal work was performed by clearance divers from the coastal minehunter HMAS Gascoyne which was dispatched from Sydney for the task.
