Australia set to cut Nauru and Manus Island asylum seeker deal with US

Some 1800 asylum seeker boat arrivals at Australia's offshore detention centres could be about to be resettled under a deal with the US.
Australia and the US are "poised" to announce an immigration solution after months of negotiations, The Australian reports.
This could involve the US taking detainees from Nauru in the South Pacific and Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, following the federal government's hard line policy to deny boat arrivals any chance of setting foot on Australian soil.
Cabinet Minister Christoher Pyne didn't confirm the report, but did note there was plenty of time before Donald Trump's inauguration to make an announcement.
"If it's the case, it will be another great achievement from the Turnbull government," he told the Nine Network on Friday.
Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese welcomed the news.
"These are people who are refugees, who have been found to be refugees, who, if they are settled in a country like the United States, that will be a good thing," he said.
