It was Nats in hats on the first day of summer in Canberra.

Nationals MPs arrived at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday wearing Akubra hats to promote regional business and the health benefits of the famous broad-brim.

Nationals frontbencher Luke Hartsuyker said the NSW regional town of Kempsey is the home of two Australian icons - country music legend Slim Dusty and the Akubra.

"As Nationals we'd encourage all business people to think about regional Australia as a location for your business and the advantages regional Australia can bring," he told reporters.

Rural Health Minister Fiona Nash said 80 per cent of new cancers diagnosed in Australia are skin cancers.

"On the first day of summer Australians need to think 'look after your skin, put on a hat'," she said.
