I have support of party: Nationals leader

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has declared he is supported by the Nationals party room, staring down leadership rumblings.

Mr McCormack dismissed reports his job was under pressure, as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull fought leadership tensions from conservative Liberals.

"I certainly have the support of my party room," the Nationals leader told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

Mr McCormack has lost support from backbenchers over his ability to be taken as seriously by the prime minister as Barnaby Joyce was, News Corp reports.

Flanked by senior Nationals at a media conference, Mr McCormack said the junior coalition partner had been getting a good hearing in cabinet.

"The prime minister and I have a very good working relationship - that will continue. The prime minister has my support - that will continue," Mr McCormack said.

Earlier, Veterans Affairs Minister Darren Chester batted away suggestions Mr McCormack had lost the support of Nationals backbenchers.

"It's an unnamed source claiming something. I went to the party room last week and Michael had great support. I'm sure he'll have great support again," he told Sky News on Monday.

Mr Chester pointed to Sunday's announcement of new funding to help drought-affected communities as evidence Mr McCormack was delivering for regional Australia.

The veterans affairs minister said his leader, who replaced Mr Joyce after he was forced to quit amid the fallout from his affair with a staff member, had taken on the job at a tough time.

"He's a guy that is very determined to get out there and make sure we're delivering real outcomes for regional people. Michael is doing a great job," Mr Chester said.
