Owner of missing finger part found in Sydney toilet block comes forward

The mystery of a severed finger found in a Sydney toilet block that left police forensic experts stumped has been solved.

Police were called to Balmoral Beach, on the city's north shore, on December 23 to find part of a finger or toe on a blood splattered floor.

In a post on its Facebook site, Harbourside Police said a forensic pathologist identified the appendage was human and the injury was not life threatening.

But they had no luck in tracing its owner. There were no witnesses or CCTV footage to help the inquiry.

Officers also drew a blank when they ran a finger print check.

But yesterday police announced that a "young owner of the finger" had claimed it.

An update said the severing was caused after it had been trapped between a toilet door and the frame.

There were no suspicious circumstances.
