‘Mutant rats’ among bizarre calls at Australia-first complaints registry

An Australia-first complaints register is giving consumers the opportunity to have their voices heard - and tell tales of woe ranging from missing eyebrows, to "mutant rats".

NSW Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Matt Kean overseas the NSW Fair Trading register, which he says is about protecting the consumer.

"I want to make sure the little guy gets a fair go," he said.

"The complaints register is about providing information so the consumers can make informed choices, but also (so) that businesses can pull up their socks and make sure they're delivering better customer service."

Although some of Australia's more well-known companies are among the most-reported, Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe said the monthly list also showed a number of smaller retailers to be cautious of.

Some complaints among the 60 calls staff receive per day, are more bizarre than others.

Call centre coordinator Leticia said they had received one about "mutant rats" - which turned out to be related to an out-of-control mould problem.

Another irate caller rang up after losing her eyebrows in an eyebrow wax incident.

"We like to say we hear from cradle to the grave," Leticia told A Current Affair.

"We're involved in everything from toy standards to funeral funds."
