One person remains unaccounted for as police investigate a suspicious fire, which began after an explosion, destroying a home in a gated community north of Brisbane.

Residents in Nambucca Close in Murrumba Downs reported hearing a "huge bang" just before 1pm on Wednesday.

One home swiftly went up in flames with debris strewn down the street.

"There were pieces of the house on our front lawn," one neighbour said.

"Broken glass everywhere, broken windows everywhere."

Police declared the fire suspicious and set up a crime scene at the property.

They said no injuries were reported but detectives were yet to make contact with the person living there.

Firefighters were not able to enter the property for a search after it took 35 of them two hours to bring the blaze under control.

"The scene, as you can imagine, was a bit chaotic when we first arrived," Queensland Fire and Emergency Services station officer Matthew Draper said.
