Murdered Vic baseballer honoured by MLB

Australia's first little league baseball field will be built in honour of murdered Melbourne baseball player Chris Lane.

Mr Lane, 22, was on a baseball scholarship at a US university when he was shot dead while jogging in Duncan, Oklahoma.

US Major League Baseball will build the Chris Lane Memorial Field at the Essendon Baseball Club, Mr Lane's home ground, his former coach John Edwards said.

The news was announced during the LA Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks game in Sydney on Sunday.

Mr Edwards started a petition following Chris' death in August last year, calling for the little league field to be build in his honour at his old club.

It attracted 38,000 signatures.

Mr Edwards said he would be thrilled to see Chris' nieces and nephews, now toddlers, some day running onto the field named after their uncle.

"There's a real chance that in six years time they will be playing on their uncle's field and that will be something pretty special for the whole family," he said.

The little league field is estimated to cost $1 million to build and there are ambitious plans to have it constructed by the first anniversary of Chris' death in August.
