A man has been charged with murder after a 56-year-old was stabbed to death near a Sydney train station.

Police found the dead man near the Forrest Road Entrance to Hurstville Railway Station just after 6am yesterday.

"He just received major, major trauma and major lacerations to the body," Inspector David Ralph said.

"It does appear he has walked at least 20 metres or so before he fell to the ground. As I turned up, ambulance were working on him and so were police."

A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby and has since been charged with murder.

Hurstville is about 16km south of the Sydney CBD.
