Mundine eyes bid for prime minister

Anthony Mundine has revealed that he is considering a run for prime minister, but would change the way Australian politics worked in the process.

The rugby league star turned boxing champ told Fit N Flexed that he wants to try and leave a legacy.

"I just wanna work with the young, inspire the youth, work for my people, uplift my people, and I dunno man who knows, I might even run for prime minister, see what happens," he said.

"If I was prime minister, the way I'd run it, any issue they wanted to talk about — I'd just do a poll.

"I'd just do a poll to the people, and let the people decide."

Mundine would not be the first boxer to make a switch to politics.

Former heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko is currently a party leader in Ukrainian parliament.

Eight-time world champion Manny Pacquiao is also a member of the House of Representatives in the Philippines.

A bid for prime minister would also put Mundine in the political ring with Tony Abbott, who earned two Blues as a heavyweight at Oxford University.

Mundine had been preparing for a bout with Carson Jones next week, but the American made a surprise withdrawal over the weekend due to influenza.

A replacement opponent is now being sought.
