Mum, child, escape Melbourne house fire

A mother and young child have been saved by a smoke alarm set off by a fire in their Melbourne home.

The pair were awoken by the alarm and managed to evacuate safely after a fire in the roof of their Mill Park house early Thursday.

Fire crews quickly brought the blaze under control, with the damage estimated at more than $80,000.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire will be investigated.
