Motoring Enthusiast Ricky Muir wants to refer the abolition of the road safety watchdog to a parliamentary committee and delay a vote by a few weeks.

The government appears to have enough crossbench votes to pass legislation to scrap the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal, after it set new minimum pay rates which owner-drivers fear will drive them out of business.

However, Senator Muir urged his crossbench colleagues to back an inquiry to report before the budget to ensure the abolition goes ahead based on facts not knee-jerk politics.
