A man who murdered his heavily pregnant partner has refused to look at her loved as ones as they described him as "pathetic", "cowardly" and "evil."

Eight of Kirralee Paepaerei's loved ones spoke of the pain they had endured since she was bashed, then stabbed 49 times by Joshua Homann in their Mount Druitt home.

"This very intelligent human being was killed to satisfy a very destructive human need, only a devil is capable of this," her stepfather Godwin D'Ugo said.

Her mother Joyce D'Ugo added "you robbed us of so much, her laughter ... her sense of humour, her presence, a granddaughter who she named Mia."

The couple wore purple polo shirts with a photo of their daughter and the slogan "say no to domestic violence".

The court heard Ms Paepaerei was excited to be having the baby girl she had dreamed of, and had planned to leave Homann.

He was in a self-induced psychosis after taking the drug ice on the morning of the murder, after which he ran to a nearby police station and claimed to have been attacked in a home invasion.

Ms Paepaerei's stepmother Ann Ciaschetti today asked: "Why? 'Why' repeatedly comes to mind ... I have no answers."

Homann held his head in his hands throughout much of the hearing.

He cannot be charged with murdering his unborn child so Crown prosecutor Sean Hughes could only argue it was an aggravating factor because the pregnancy made the victim more vulnerable.

"In her own bedroom, late of night, she was entitled to feel safe," he said.

He will be sentenced on May 25.
