MPs urged to respect Hughes funeral

Speaker Bronwyn Bishop has asked MPs to behave in question time because it is being held at the same time as the funeral for cricketer Phillip Hughes.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten are both at the funeral in the NSW town of Macksville.

Ms Bishop told parliament at the start of question time on Wednesday that all MPs should note the coincidental timing.

"Perhaps we could consider that in our discourse today," she said.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne thought so too.

Answering a Labor question about university deregulation, Mr Pyne was met with opposition interjections.

"I do note that it's Phil Hughes' funeral and I would ask the opposition to at least consider, today of all days, their behaviour in the chamber," Mr Pyne said.

Treasurer Joe Hockey was also met with calls from the opposition when talking about the economy.

"Show respect for the moment," he told Labor MPs.

Moments later, Labor MP Ed Husic was kicked out by the Speaker for interjecting.
