MPs in high spirits as year begins

Federal MPs are beginning the parliamentary year in high spirits as they gather for a traditional church service.

"I think the year is one of great economic opportunity not just here in Australia but all around the world," Treasurer Scott Morrison told reporters on Monday as he arrived fresh from a trip to the US.

Both houses of parliament begin business at 10am (AEDT).
