Frydenberg calls for action after 'despicable and dangerous' attack on MP's Melbourne office

Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg has called for more action after the electoral office of a federal MP was vandalised.

The Melbourne electoral office of Josh Burns, who is Jewish, was extensively damaged in the early hours of the morning.

The member for the Macnamara branded the attack as "politically motivated" after the group smashed the windows of his office and graffitied an anti-Zionist slogan.

Burnes said he and his team would not be in the office until he was told it was safe to be there.

"I'm nervous about someone getting hurt or worse," he told media today.

Frydenberg, the former member for Kooyong, spoke out to condemn the attack as "despicable and dangerous".

He urged more action from political leaders and law enforcement to protect the community.

"Our leaders must step up and wrest control back from the mob," Frydenberg wrote in a post on X.

Frydenberg, who is also Jewish, claimed that same group had "free rein since October 7 to act in a violent, hateful and un-Australian manner".

"It is not just the Jewish community that is under attack its Australia's social cohesion that is under attack and the very values that underpin it," he wrote.

Police confirmed the group responsible for today's vandalism also started two small fires: one beside the office entrance and another outside the door facing the street where residential apartments are located.

"Zionism is fascism" was spray-painted across the front of the office.

Burns condemned it as "reckless vandalism".

"It was clearly politically motivated by having the graffiti on the outside of the office. It was ugly behaviour and it was dangerous," he said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident represented an escalation of "political violence".

"I condemn the attack on the electorate office of Josh Burns," Albanese said on social media.

"Those responsible should face the full force of the law.

"This is a serious attack.

"The targeting of a Jewish MP is very distressing. There is no place for political violence in Australia."

Chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission Dr Dvir Abramovich said the vandalism was "concerning".

"I am gravely concerned because where vandalism begins, tragedy can follow and it's time to pull the alarm bells," Abramovich said.

"We stand firmly with Josh Burns during this difficult time.

"We trust that those who carried out this outrage are identified and are brought to justice We have all had enough of this menace."

Footage obtained by 3AW shows the moment the group set multiple fires outside the building before the offenders fled the scene.

The vandalism comes just months after the federal member for Macnamara's office was first targeted.

Police are investigating the fire and vandalism and have established a crime scene.
