Police are investigating whether an explosion at an Adelaide shopping centre this morning is linked to a similar attack at the Adelaide Zoo earlier this year.

The suspect in today’s incident allegedly smashed through a door to get into the Tea Tree Plaza Shopping Centre in Modbury at around 3am.

The would-be thief is believed to have tried to force open an ATM with a crowbar, before pouring a suspected chemical substance into the machine and causing a small explosion.

No money was taken from the ATM.

The shopping centre was locked down and turned away both workers and shoppers until it was reopened later this afternoon.

The ATM was damaged and remained cordoned off.

Police have received information from the public about the whereabouts of the motorbike.

They have released CCTV images of a motorcyclist and are urging anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In May, the Adelaide Zoo was forced to close after a liquid explosive was used to blow up an ATM in a failed robbery attempt.
