Carbon tax repeal on home straight: Hunt

The federal government believes it's cleared the final hurdle to scrapping the carbon tax and will have the support of the Palmer United Party (PUP) in the senate.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt expects the government's third attempt to remove the price on carbon pollution will be successful this week after talks with the minor party on the weekend about a proposed PUP amendment.

The amendment aims to toughen sanctions against companies that don't pass on price cuts from the abolition to consumers and clarifies which businesses will be penalised.

"This applies to the (energy) suppliers and retailers - only a small group of about 60 firms," Mr Hunt told ABC radio.

Family First senator Bob Day and Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm were concerned about the unintended impact on businesses, but now say they are satisfied with the changes.

The government is expected to fast-track the repeal bills through the House of Representatives on Monday.

Senator Day wants to get on with the job.

"You don't want an ever receding finishing line situation to develop," he told ABC radio.

"Let's hope we are at the finish line.

PUP senators will meet on Monday morning to finalise their position and appear like to approve the amendment, clearing the way for the repeal of the carbon tax.
