Morrison still has edge as budget manager
Voters appear to be giving Scott Morrison the benefit of the doubt.
He is still more trusted to manage the economy than Chris Bowen even though voters are hardly punching the air over the treasurer's first budget.
The latest Essential Research poll found nearly a third of respondents backing Mr Morrison as the better economic manager, up from 26 per cent in April.
Mr Bowen rated just 20 per cent, down slightly from 23 per cent previously.
However, respondents were less than generous with their thoughts over the budget itself, with 61 per cent saying it favours businesses over workers and 53 per cent believing it was more about improving the government's popularity than supporting the economy.
The monthly consumer confidence survey compiled by Westpac and the Melbourne Institute due to be released on Wednesday may provide further thoughts on the budget.
The weekly gauge by ANZ and Roy Morgan showed confidence flatlined despite the first interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank in a year being announced on budget day.
Economists expect the usual positive response that is generated by a rate cut was dampened by the budget.
Housing finance figures for March are also released, but are somewhat dated by the cut in the cash rate to a record low 1.75 per cent last week.
