Great-grandmother mourned after 'gut-wrenching' Monbulk fatal house fire
A 96-year-old great grandmother has been killed after a fire tore through her home in Melbourne's east.
Emergency crews were called to the property on Nugent Road, Monbulk, just before 10pm after police, who were finishing their shift, noticed smoke coming over the back fence.
"The flames were through the roof before anyone even noticed the fire was there," Victoria Police Sergeant Luke Schroder said.

Jacoba Vegt was found inside the home where she lived alone.
She was a mother-of-four, a grandmother and a great grandmother who loved to cook and sew, her family said.
Two of her children returned to the family home this morning, still trying to come to terms with the devastating loss.

Heartbroken son John told 9News his mother's death was "gut-wrenching".
"Terrible, absolutely terrible," he said.
"The memories will still be there, we'll move on…but it's going to take a bit."
Seven fire trucks were called in to help battle the blaze and it was controlled within 10 minutes of them arriving.

The Arson Squad was on scene trying to determine how the fire started.
Police say it is not being treated as suspicious.
