Moment arsonist torches Merc caught on CCTV

Police are hunting a man who deliberately set alight to a car in Sydney's south-west.

Detectives today released CCTV footage of the moment a man runs from a white Holden Cruze before an object explodes in his hands.

He then throws it onto a car near the Newington home as the item erupts into a second fireball.

The fire then spreads and sets the house alight, causing significant damage.

Police are continuing to investigate the suspicious blaze that destroyed the car and house at 1.30am on July 6.

Emergency services responded to reports of the vehicle fire outside the Watt Avenue home and found the blaze had spread to the house, which was unoccupied at the time.

The blaze was extinguished, however, it had destroyed the Mercedes Benz and caused significant damage to the two-storey home.
The man seen in the footage is described as being between 170cm and 180cm tall, of an average build, and with short hair.

Police are urging anyone with any information or who might be able to assist in identifying the man to come forward and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
