The city that wants to put the brakes on mobility scooters

Mobility scooter users could be faced with a restrictive speed limit amid one capital city's push for stronger restrictions on the devices.

Brisbane City Council is pushing for a strict crackdown on scooter users, including reducing the speed limit from 10km/hr to 6km/hr, according to the Courier-Mail.

The council is also calling on the Palaszczuk state government to introduce a licensing system on scooter drivers for the first time.

Scooters might be used to evade drink- or drug-driving charges, the Pedestrian Council of Australia has said.

Brisbane Council also said mobility scooters were becoming so popular that footpaths needed to be widened.

However, the Queenslanders with Disability Network has opposed the move, saying it might impinge on the "mobility, freedom of movement, and rights" of people with disability who use scooters.

The push from the Brisbane City Council comes amid an investigation in federal parliament into the safety of the mobility devices.

Nationals senator John Williams has claimed his wife required a hip replacement after being struck and knocked down by a scooter user.
