Thousands of a popular Mitsubishi four-wheel-drive vehicle are being recalled amid fears its steering could fail.

The Japanese manufacturer has recalled the 2017/18 Mitsubishi Pajero NX which was bought by more than 6300 Australians between November 2016 and July 2019.

The company is concerned about the welding strength of the right-hand lower control arm.

Mitsubishi Australia warns if the control arm fails, the steering may stop operating, increasing the risk of an accident for the driver and other road users.

A total of 6384 vehicles are being recalled.

Affected owners will be contacted by the manufacturer and advised to organise a free repair with their nearest dealers.
