'Monster' sex offender Christopher Empey to be extradited from NSW to Victoria

A violent sex offender is due to be extradited to Victoria from NSW after he was arrested in a remote camping spot in the Snowy Mountains.

Christopher Empey, 46, was spotted by a member of the public yesterday at Tin Mine Huts in Kosciuszko National Park and was arrested about 5pm, bringing an end more than six weeks on the run.

Police had received a tip-off from a member of the public and he is expected to appear in Cooma Local Court today.

Victoria Police began the search for Empey on November 23 after he removed his GPS bracelet in the area of Mansfield, in the state’s north-east.

Empey was described as a "monster" by a judge in 2003, when he was jailed 12 years for raping a woman in Melbourne.

The 30-year-old woman suffered multiple head and facial injuries, including skull fractures, a torn ear and severe vaginal and anal injuries.

Empey was released on parole in 2015 and in July this year was put on the Sex Offenders Register, requiring him to wear a GPS tracking device.

He was due in court in November over an interim supervision order but did not show and subsequent investigations found he fled his Maindample property, near Mansfield, a day earlier.

Despite fleeing with his passport, Empey was not considered a flight risk because Border Force would have prevented him from leaving the country.
