Missing cat reunited with London owners after being found in Paris eight years later

Mystery surrounds the discovery of a London cat alive and well in Paris more than eight years after she went missing.

'Moon Unit' was reported missing by her owners Marna Gillian and Sean Purdy following a New Year’s Eve Party in early 2007.

"She must have slipped out at some point? We spent ages searching for her, postering/leafleting/phoning around etc. But no cat," Ms Gillian told Mashable.

Nothing was heard of Moon Unit in the intervening eight years, until just last month, when French animal rescue charity L'association d'Aide et de Défense (ADAD) contacted Ms Gillian to notify her they’d picked up the missing cat in the southern Paris suburb of Essonne.

“They'd traced us by her microchip," Ms Gillian said.

"I didn't believe it was her — I thought it would be a mistake — until we exchanged photographs.

“She's got a really distinctive stripe on her nose, so as soon as we saw the photo we knew we'd found her."

Ms Gillian is unsure of how Moon Unit arrived there, but suspects she may have "found a new family [and] was brought over by them, and then ran away”.

Ms Gillian and Mr Purdy have since travelled to Paris to fetch their messing feline.

They report she is settling in fine, “eating/sleeping/doing all the normal cat things”.

Meanwhile Ms Gillian has launched a Crowd Funding campaign to help raise funds for the rescue charity responsible for helping her bring Moon Unit home.
