Ministers head to Washington for IS talks

Australia's defence and foreign ministers are bound for Washington for a key international meeting aimed at countering the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Julie Bishop and Marise Payne's attendance comes as coalition countries look to build on recent military gains against the extremists' network.

Ms Bishop is set to announce an extra $15 million in humanitarian assistance for Iraq, including $5 million to clear landmines and contributions to emergency food relief and the UN's refugee agency.

She will also have her first meeting with the colourful newly-appointed UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

During a panel discussion with international security experts, Ms Bishop will talk about the importance of intelligence sharing and co-operation.
