PM doesn't want milk levy to hit Australian families

Scott Morrison appears luke warm to the idea of a milk levy to help drought hit farmers.

While the prime minister said he’s “not rejecting it”, he doesn’t favour “solving a problem with a tax”.

Agriculture Minister, David Littleproud, is considering the suggestion of a 10 cent levy, put forward by farm groups.

“I don’t want to see an increase in prices for Australians,” Mr Morrison told the Today Show.

“But I’m very sensitive of the issues, not just faced in drought by affected farmers, but we have the issue with the dairy farmers.”

He said the minister would bring forward submissions to cabinet.

“But I don’t want to see people’s prices go up.

“I want to ensure we can ensure the sustainability and viability of our dairy sector but not at a cost to mums and dads.

“I’m not rejecting it. That is certainly the case.”
