Migrant grandparent visa to be rolled out

Migrants will be able to bring their parents to Australia for up to 10 years under a new temporary visa program to be announced in next week's federal budget.

Citizens and permanent residents will be able to apply for the visa for five years at a cost of $10,000 and will then be able to renew it for another five years, SBS News reports.

There will also be a cheaper three-year option.

There will be 15,000 places on offer and participants will have to take out private health insurance but won't have work rights.

Assistant Immigration Minister Alex Hawke told SBS he expects there to be some savings on child care costs because grandparents will be able to babysit.

The visa program is expected to start in November so long as legislation passes parliament.
